T4T: You Can Never Learn Too Much

Items

"May 15th-June 15th is Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month (click here to learn more).

Tourette syndrome (TS) is an inherited disorder of the nervous system, characterized by a variable expression of unwanted movements and noises (tics). It is not just what people think where you randomly cuss. Not everyone even cusses due to it. Some people will randomly spurt out other words as well and never once say a cuss word due to it. But it is far more then just words coming out of your mouth it can also make your body move in ways you're not telling it to from a simple twitch of a finger to seizure like movements where the entire body is twitching out of control, only you're not having an actual seizure. Because of this it makes normal life functions difficult if not properly treated."

The item will stock in Trash For Treasure until 11:59pm June 15th.

Thank you so much for this. I have two friends who have suffered from TS, and it makes me sad and angry when people laugh at it because of their preconceived (and incorrect!) notions about what TS is. NEITHER of them even had cursing as a tic. Not that it isn't possible, but it's so good to have awareness for this so that people know that isn't all that TS is.

I have facial and muscle ticks. I used to have it with random high pitched sounds rather than words.

The vocal tics are a lot less common now that I'm an adult.

Thanks for spreading awareness.

All the awareness here on Aywas is so awesome <3
I have a friend with TS, her tics are blinking her eyes and nodding her head and sometimes she makes sounds, but it's rare.
I'll let her know there is an awareness day for it, I'm sure she'll be happy about it ^^

I have this but wasn't diagnosed until recently.... I wish I'd known sooner, because I just thought I was being weird.

I actually knew about this because of a guy in High School. He was the type that cussed thanks to it and, thanks to that, most people could not concentrate in class because of it when they sat near him. To remedy this, the teacher had him sit on the edge of the classroom next to me, as I was one of the few people who could still concentrate with him around, so that way all the students could concentrate and so that he would not feel alone. Now before you go blaming my teacher for ostracizing him for his disability, please understand that the student himself had evidently requested to be put on the edge of the classroom, so that he would not distract from the lessons.

I'm glad you're pointing out to people that this does exist. ^_^
