Details. The more details you put onto something, the better it seems. Take a tree. You could do a flat bunch of leaves. But if you go in and do individual leaves, it looks cooler. A bunch of quick stripes on a tiger, but go through and do a bunch of stripes, varying in size and shape, it looks cooler. More details and more time put into a design really shows. ^_^

Tip : Use layers. (Yes this is a very obvious tip but in the beginning, I never actually did use layers - and this really helped me to keep track.)

Be careful about making your shading too dark - that can completely kill an otherwise awesome pet design! ^_^
